Notes on the final week by Richard T. Jameson and Kathleen Murphy

SIFFtings IV

"Protektor" (Marek Najbrt, Czech Republic/Germany, 2009; 98 mins.)The World War II years remain an inexhaustible source of dramatic material, and as our culture grows ever more amnesiac, it's probably salutary that filmmakers keep trying to find ways into the period.

New Republicans surface at state convention

The Right Side

The Dow Jones just had its worst month in 70 years. Longtime allies now vote against us in the United Nations. Over 60 percent of voters oppose ObamaCare and Congress barely registers a modicum of respect. Oil continues polluting the Gulf Coast while the White House tries to get control of media coverage rather than the spill.

Relaxing bus stop closures a good idea for the elderly

Editorial 6/23

Metro had planned on closing several No. 3 and 4 bus stops along Queen Anne. That drew complaints from some elderly and disabled people who needed those stops. They needed the stops because much of Taylor Avenue North is a hill and having to trudge an extra five or six blocks to a different stop - with a walker or in a wheelchair - is not an easy task.

Nothing heals the loss of a child

Lest we forget

Two weekends ago was beautiful, wasn't it? After weeks of playing peek-a-boo with the sun and living through the constant, dismal rain, summer announced it has arrived.

Dan Westmore a bum

Letters 6/23

"Dan Westmore is beholden to no one." Mr. Westmore appears beholden to many (Homeless man 6/16/10). He left his wife and five-year-old child to serve his own needs. He collects food stamps, and wants to get into subsidized housing at the expense of those who pay their own way.
