Each year, Aegis Living hosts its annual leadership meeting, EPIC (Empowering People, Inspiring Consciousness). The meeting is meant to give each person time to step away from all job responsibilities and focus on themselves — their aspirations and inspirations. Aside from a slew of internationally renowned speakers and guests, the company honors employees from across 34 communities for work excellence.

At this year’s event, Queen Anne’s Carrie Saul was named Care Director of the Year. Saul, who began her journey at Aegis Living Galer, worked her way up in the truest sense, starting out as a care manager to medication technician, followed by associate care director and, today, care director at Aegis Living Rogers Park.

“Carrie is the perfect combination of a flawless leader and heart of gold,”  Aegis Living Rogers Park General Manager Nick Sponaugle said. “She continues to encourage and inspire her care team, ensuring they are supported every step of the way, while also providing our residents with truly exceptional care.”

Saul didn’t always work in health care or senior assisted living. In fact, she started her career in technology. After about two years, she felt uninspired, but a car accident opened her eyes to what she really wanted: to help others. She quit her job and went back to school to become a certified nurse aide. She initially planned to work at Aegis for a short time before going to work for a local hospital. Instead, she fell in love with her job and her residents.

“I love being able to make a difference in people’s lives,” Saul said. “Every day I have the opportunity to care for the same residents. I get to know them personally, like I am caring for my family.”

Saul hopes to continue on her career path at Aegis, feeling there is much more room to grow and advance.

When asked about the Care Director of the Year award and what it meant to her, she humbly replied, “This is more of a recognition of my entire team and what we were able to accomplish together.”
