Alice Rosenthal April 19, 1924 - January 17, 2018

Alice Luella Siegmund Rosenthal, aged 93, a 52-year resident of the Queen Anne Hill community of Seattle, passed away on January 17, 2018 surrounded by her children. Alice was born in Tonawanda, New York on April 19, 1924. Her parents A. Rudolph Siegmund and Alice L. Perry Siegmund, and three brothers, Rudy, Karl and Lloyd Siegmund all preceded her in death. She married Ottomar E. Rosenthal on October 18, 1947 in Tonawanda. Ottomar passed away in Seattle in 1974 after 27 years of marriage. Alice never remarried.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd (Debra) Rosenthal (Seattle), Allan (Suzanne) Rosenthal (Seattle) and Karla (Richard Powelson) (Vashon Island) and four grandchildren, Elissa Rosenthal, AnneMarie Rosenthal and Adam and Erik Powelson. She is also survived by many extended family members from Vancouver, BC to Georgia, South Carolina, Illinois and New York State.
Alice was a self-taught piano and organ player, who learned to read music on her own. For family fun her sons would join her playing their violins. She enjoyed going on vacations with her children, grandchildren and family friends, whether it was to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada or a road trip across the USA.
During WWII, Alice helped the war effort by making parachutes for the Van Raalt Company in Tonawanda. After marrying she was a homemaker and later in Seattle worked for the Skyway Luggage Company. In her younger days, Alice and Ottomar often hosted celebrations for family and friends. Having 30 or more people in attendance was not unusual. Alice’s father taught her how to cook and she enjoyed making incredible soups, stews, pies, cakes and cookies and taught her children and grandchildren to carry on her family’s culinary traditions.
In 1964 the family left Tonawanda and moved to Vancouver, BC where her husband had family and business interests. Then in 1965 Ottomar moved the family to Seattle, where Alice and Ottomar purchased and sold rental properties.
A memorial service was held at Queen Anne Lutheran Church. Memorials may be sent to Queen Anne Lutheran Church, 2400-8th Avenue West, Seattle 98119, in care of the Music Ministry.
