The current issues, controversies, and preservation efforts for public and private monuments will be the topic of a panel discussion on Thursday night at Seattle Pacific University.
The second floor of Ames Library (3226 Sixth Ave. W.) will play host to the event starting at 7 p.m. — put on by the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild — as speakers take on the role of statues in constructing the past and engaging the present, as well as how people have responded differently to them over time.
Author Robert Spalding (“Seattle’s Monuments, Memorials, and Markers”) ex-Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable president Rick Solomon, local historian Feliks Banel, and Stephanie Toothman — former Associate Director for Cultural Resources for the National Park Service — will serve on the panel. Judy Bentley will moderate.
