Local bookstores take part in Indies First

Hundreds of independent bookstores across the country are taking part in the annual Indies First campaign on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 25), including shops in Queen Anne and Magnolia.

Queen Anne Book Company (1811 Queen Anne Ave. N.) will have authors in-shop throughout the day (and suggests there may be some surprise visits as well), while all purchases over $75 come with a free Indies First tote bag or a Libro.fm T-shirt.

Magnolia's Bookstore (3206 W. McGraw St.) will welcome Molly Hashimoto ("Colors of the West: An Artist's Guide to Nature's Palate) from 4 to 6 p.m., as the first-ever Magnolia Art Walk takes place in the Village. The first 30 customers to spend $50 or more will receive a free "Eat. Sleep. Read." reusable bag, while a copy of Hashimoto's book will be raffled off at the end of the day.

The Indies First effort itself traces back to Queen Anne Book Company, stemming from a day local author Sherman Alexie spent at the shop as a bookseller soon after it reopened in 2013.
