Community marks National Bike Month with annual blessing

Gray skies and a little rain didn't deter Queen Anne neighbors from celebrating National Bike Month at St. Anne's Church (101 W. Lee St.) last Saturday. Interfaith Ministries of Greater Queen Anne sponsored its 4th Annual Bikes and Wheels blessing led by Judy Vitzthum, pastoral assistant for community involvement at St. Anne’s.

"This was another great opportunity to meet some wonderful members of our community and to offer blessings to all types of wheeled devices," Vitzthum said.  "We were so pleased to see everything from bikes to a wheelchair and wheeled walker at our gathering.”

One of the many blessings given was especially poignant:

"By bike or by trike; by walker or by wagon; by skateboard, skates or Segway; by wheelchair or pram...when we roll, grant us awareness and respect for those around us, gratitude for those who make curb-cuts and paint bike lanes, and forgiveness toward any who might not be understanding of our means of getting around."

Established in 1956, May is National Bike Month and each year the number and diversity of bike celebrations from coast to coast continues to grow, showcasing the many benefits of bicycling.

Interfaith Ministries next project is its annual Backpacks for Kids drive to benefit Mary's Place.  For more information contact Ann Pearce at 206-284-0604.
