The following are selected reports from the Seattle Police Department's West Precinct. They represent the officer's accounts of the events described.
Smashed Door
At 10:40 a.m. on June 7, a person living in the 1100 block of Bigelow Avenue North called 911 to report their house had been broken into. The homeowner told officers the burglary occurred sometime between 7 p.m. the night before, and 8 a.m. that morning.When they came home, they found the glass smashed out of a French door and several drawers throughout the house pulled out and rummaged through. The individual said they didn’t think anything was actually taken during the burglary, but the broken door would cost about $2,000 to fix.
Big Haul
Just after 12:30 a.m. on June 5, a homeowner called 911 from the 1400 block of Seventh Avenue West, when they came home to find their house ransacked, and thought a burglar may still be inside. Responding officers checked the home for suspects, but it was empty.
The victim said a large package had been strategically placed on the front porch, possibly to make it more difficult for him to get in the door. The glass back door had been broken, presumably by an object being thrown through it. Drawers and closets in every room had been rummaged through, and the victim reported about $50,000 worth of jewelry was stolen. Also stolen was about $2,000 cash in several currencies, including Chinese, British and French.
Unlocked Window
Just before 11:30 p.m. on June 3, police responded to a home in the 2000 block of Dexter Avenue North when the resident reported that they returned home to find it was burglarized.
It appeared that the burglar popped the screen out of a kitchen window to gain entrance to the home. Stolen was an tablet computer, an e-reader, a speaker and headset, a humidor with cigars and a passport.
Drug Thief
A person staying in a hotel in the 600 block of Roy Street reported somebody stole 80 prescription Oxycotin pills from his hotel room just after 5 p.m. on June 2.
The individual said the theft happened between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day, and told police he believes the hotel’s maid took the pills. Hotel staff told police they don’t believe it was the maid, and that the person in question has been employed at the hotel for seven years.
Alarm Trip
Just after midnight on June 2, police responded to an alarm call at an office building in the 1900 block of Dexter Avenue North. The property manager also responded to the scene.
When they arrived, they found that someone had taken a chair from an outside walkway and used it to smash out an exterior window of one of the offices. The property manager was unable to get a hold of the manager of the business who rents the office, so he wasn’t sure if anything was stolen. Police found a soggy pack of cigarettes on the sidewalk in front of the broken window, and collected it as evidence.
Out of Town
At 9:30 p.m. on June 1, officers responded to a tripped alarm at a house in the 500 block of Lee Street. The homeowners were out of town, and spoke with police on the phone. The front door was forced open, but without the homeowners present they couldn’t be sure if anything was stolen. It appeared that the burglar had gone upstairs and entered the bathroom, bedroom and a walk-in closet. A family friend reported to the house to secure it.
Threatening Shoplifter
Just before 10:30 p.m. on June 13, the manager of a store in the 2000 block of 15th Avenue West called 911 after a shoplifter made threats to kill him. The manager reported that the suspect frequently comes in and steals from the store, and earlier that day he took some merchandise into the restroom, where he was seen putting the items down his pants and into his backpack.
When asked to give the merchandise back, the suspect made threatening comments to the manager, including threats to kill him. Fearing for his safety, the manager backed off and let the suspect go. When officers arrived, the suspect was gone, but the store’s staff gave them surveillance video of the incident that showed the suspect’s face.
Pushy Shoplifter
Police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at a convenience store in the 1000 block of Denny Way at 5:45 a.m. on June 8. The store clerk said some regular shoplifters came in and started concealing food into their bags.
The clerk stopped them and told them to put the items back. One of the suspect followed those requests, while the other did not, and pushed the clerk out of the way, knocking him down. The couple then left on foot.
When police arrived they checked the area for the shoplifters, but they could not be located. The clerk said he had a scratch on his finger from being pushed down, but was otherwise unharmed.
