Tastes of the season | QAFM hosts first market day of 2016

After an eight-month hiatus, the familiar sites, sounds, and smells from local farmers and food vendors returned to West Crockett Street last week.

Approximately 50 vendors were on hand for the first Queen Anne Farmers Market of the season, but along with a number of new farmers and food trucks, the market also sports a new director in Brittany Ryan.

Originally from Kentucky, Ryan moved to Seattle last year after working for Union Square Greenmarket, New York City’s flagship farmers market. Several months after arriving in the Emerald City, the Queen Anne role became available.

“It was the perfect position,” she said, “and I love it so much, so I’m really excited.”

Ryan said the addition of new farmers, particularly young farmers, is compatible with the greater goals of the market.

“One of the things that we do is champion local and support local farms and farmland, so that’s just fitting right into our mission perfectly,” she said.

The market returns every Thursday until Oct. 13, from 3 to 7:30 p.m.
