The following are selected reports from the Seattle Police Department’s West Precinct. They represent the officers’ accounts of the events described.
Exciting Walk to Work
Just before 10 a.m. on July 13, a person called 911 to report they had been pepper sprayed by a stranger at the corner of Dexter Avenue North and Denny Way. The victim said they had been walking to work when the suspect came up from behind him and pepper sprayed them.
The victim turned around in time to see it coming, and was able to duck and avoid getting sprayed in the face. The suspect rode off on his bike eastbound on Denny Way and the victim went home and called 911.
Early Morning Assault
Just after 4 a.m. on July 10, police responded to the 300 block of Broad Street after a reported assault. The victim told police she was assaulted by two men, but was overwhelmed from the incident and couldn’t remember what the men looked like.
She said she’d been around Seattle Center when the assault occurred, but wasn’t sure where. She said one of the suspects punched her in the back of the head, and claimed that she’d been kicked in the head while she was still standing up. She asked for an ambulance to take her to Harborview Medical Center.
Creepy Crawler
At 6:15 a.m. on July 13, police were dispatched to the 600 block of Queen Anne Avenue North to investigate a burglary in progress. The witness who called 911 stated they had seen a burglar break the window of a building on the block, and crawl into the building. When police arrived, they were directed by witnesses to the side of the building on First Avenue West.
Witnesses said the suspect crawling up the stairs of the building from the first floor to the second. When the burglar heard police coming he broke out a second floor window and jumped out of it. An officer on foot found the suspect on the north side of a property after he’d jumped a fence. The suspect had cuts all over his arms, with pieces of glass stuck to his skin.
There was a blood stain underneath the window on the north side of the building. The suspect told police he was drunk and was just looking for his car. He was arrested and booked into King County Jail for felony burglary.
Shattered Door
Just after 7:30 a.m. on July 11, a passerby called 911 to report a broken glass door at a store in the 1500 block of Queen Anne Avenue North.
Police arrived and found the glass front door was shattered and the door was unlocked and standing open. There was nobody inside the store. The owner responded and reported $400 was missing from the register.
Officers checked for fingerprints, but didn’t find any. The store has security cameras, and police told the owner to check the footage for anything useful.
Unlucky Burglar
At 8:45 a.m. on July 11, police responded to a house in the 1500 block of Seventh Avenue West to investigate an attempted break-in. The homeowner said they had been away from home between 10 p.m. on July 9 and 1 p.m. the following day. When the homeowner returned they found fresh pry marks on the wood front door. She looked around the house some more and found a window screen on the north side of the house had been removed and more pry marks on the window frame. Despite all of these efforts, the burglar didn’t get into the house.
Sophisticated Burglar
Just before 8:30 a.m. on July 10, police responded to a reported burglary in a home in the 2200 block of Viewmont Way West. The burglary occurred sometime between 5 p.m. on July 8, and 3 p.m. the following day.
The victim said they had been contacted by a neighbor, who told them a chair had been moved in their yard, and they had seen someone in the house on the evening of July 8.
Police inspected the basement window the burglar had entered through, and determined the burglar used a glasscutter to cut a hole in the window. The entire house was ransacked and many items were stolen. The victim was still in the process of taking inventory of all the stolen items when police arrived.
Just after 1:30 a.m. on July 8, police responded to a house in the 2400 block of Ninth Avenue West after the homeowners called 911 to report someone had broken onto the house while they were sleeping.
The victims said they had awoken to a loud bang from downstairs, and when they went down to investigate they saw the back door had been forced open.
Police looked at the door and found it had been damaged from the force. The doorframe was broken with the striker plate knocked out and lying on the floor. The victims said only a pink purse was missing. Nothing else looked like it had been touched.
