School Board candidates to answer to students in debate

On Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m., at the Vera Project, Seattle Center, a dozen high school students will lead a one-hour, live public debate for four candidates competing for two positions on the Seattle School Board: Suzanne Dale Estey and Sue Peters, District 4 (Queen Anne and Magnolia); and Stephan Blanford and LaCrese Green, District 5 (Central and Northeast Seattle).

The student-led debate will take place in conjunction with Seattle CityClub’s second-annual Youth Civic Education Awards ceremony.

The high school students leading the debate represent winning programs of the Colleen Willoughby Youth Civic Education Award in 2012 and 2013. Students received training in debate format, information about what makes an effective school board member and information about each candidate, and developed the questions they will ask. The students will run the entire debate.

The public is welcome to attend the free debate and awards program. Registration is required at www.SeattleCityClub.org or by calling (206) 682-7395. The school board debate is presented in partnership with Our Schools Coalition, SOAR and Youth Development Executives of King County.
