Queen Anne Chamber honors top businesses

The Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce honored four neighborhood businesses April 14 that have gone above and beyond in their support of both the Chamber and the greater Queen Anne community.

The companies were honored at the Chamber’s fifth annual awards luncheon, held at the Space Needle Skyline Level. For the second year in a row, the event featured keynote speaker Pat Cashman, who humorously poked fun at the neighborhood, saying that Queen Anne is best known as the gateway to Ballard.

“It’s very kind of the Chamber to have me back again this year,” Cashman said. “I’m sure it was a major mistake.”

This year’s winners included the Uptown Metropolitan Market, which received the President’s Award in honor of its fundraising efforts for area organizations, such as the Queen Anne Helpline and the Seattle Milk Fund. Its Scrip Program provides schools and youth groups with a simple, year-round fundraising vehicle and the market has also been a longtime supporter of the Chamber’s programs.

This year’s Large Business Award was given to Queen Anne Manor Senior Living. It also recently opened Anna’s Garden, Queen Anne’s first memory care community for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related challenges. The organization also allows local volunteer groups to use its facilities.

The Small Business Award went to David Peterson at Midlakes Insurance. Peterson, who attended John Hay Elementary, has been a tireless advocate for many Queen Anne organizations, including serving as president of the Chamber at various times and also advocating for the chamber and the Queen Anne business community.

The Community Service Award was given to Sacred Heart Parish. Established in 1889, Sacred Heart has been a part of the Queen Anne community since 1929. The organization supplies 200 to 300 sack lunches to the area poor five days a week. It also provides shelter for 60 homeless men and women nightly. Serving those most in need has been at the center of Sacred Heart’s philosophy since the organization was founded.
