Marking its 20th anniversary Book-It Repertory Theatre presents The Cider House Rules, the famed novel turned play by John Irving. It is the story of orphan Homer Wells' life in a Maine orphanage and his education under the tutelage of Dr. Larch, who delivers not only babies but their mothers, too. The play runs through July 11. Book-It Repertory Theatre is located in the Center House Theatre, at the Seattle Center. ACT Theatre 2010 Mainstage season continues with the Seattle premiere of the outrageously funny farce, The Female of the Species, through July 18. In partnership with ACT Theatre, the Fourth Annual Icicle Creek Theatre Festival (ICTF), based in Leavenworth, brings new plays by two of this country's most talented contemporary theatrical voices, along with cases and cases of extraordinary wine from Leavenworth's best wineries, to Seattle's ACT Theatre, for An Uncorked Conversation: New Play Festival and Wine Tasting, Aug. 23 and 24. Starting at 5:30 p.m., on Monday and Tuesday evenings, The Central Heating Lab at ACT hosts this first-of-its-kind event with ICTF, which allows attendees to sample more than two dozen types of wine from eight different Leavenworth wineries before moving into the theatre for an exciting new play reading by either Laura Jacqmin or Yussef El Guindi. The Queen Anne Movie Guild presents a free showing of Playing for Change: Peace Through Music at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Queen Anne United Methodist Church, 1606 Fifth Ave. W. (the pink building next door to the Queen Anne Branch Library). Entrance is on West Garfield Street. Music is the universal language that unites us all wherever in the world we may be. Come enjoy a summer evening of beautiful music performed on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, Calif., on the streets of New Orleans, in Barcelona, high up in the Himalayas, in small villages in South Africa, yet, through the wonders of technology, the musicians are "standing" together. VISUAL ARTS
The delicate sound of more than 1,000 small, cast-iron wind chimes will fill the new Theater Commons at Seattle Center, through Sept. 15. Windfall, by Seattle artists Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo. "Windfall" invites visitors to slow down and explore Theater Commons' tree-lined pedestrian corridor, terraced seating and adjacent Donnelly Gardens. Like the gardens, the artwork honors the contributions of late civic arts leader Peter Donnelly. Theater Commons is a sustainably landscaped entry to the center's campus located along Second Avenue North between Mercer Street and August Wilson Way. The space was created in collaboration with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Intiman Theatre.
A University of Washington Extension Photography Program will help the Rebuilding Efforts in Haiti will exhibit student work in two shows through Aug. 30 at the UW Medical Center Skylight Gallery. All sales from donated artwork will benefit Plant With Purpose Haiti earthquake relief work. Opening night for the second show will be held at 7 p.m., July 22. Both shows are at the UW Medical Center Skylight Gallery located at 1959 N.E. Pacific St. Seattle, Free to the public. Parking is available in the Triangle Garage or Husky Stadium. This series is getting a trial run every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. The mixer group at Queen Anne Books meets every other month, usually the last Saturday at 8 p.m. The book choices tend to be a little edgier than the traditional book club fare, and discussions are focused yet fun. After about an hour talking about the book, most head to a bar or restaurant to socialize. Attendees spend book club time talking openly and in-depth about the book. She's not the international icon of music but she knows a lot about birds? Paula McCartney will host a lecture and book signing for her book "Bird Watching" at 7 p.m., Friday, July 9 at Photo Center Northwest, 900 12th Ave. Several of her photographs will be on display. McCartney's Bird Watching seems to be a most exemplary specimen of a bird-watching journal. However, a closer look reveals that she has activated her landscapes with decorative craft store birds. Paula carries her bag of birds with her on long walks in the woods. She then finds the perfect setting to carefully place them in the trees and make them come to life. The Seattle Veterans Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. Also open on military holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day) and by appointment for groups. Continuing through July, from 5 to 9 p.m. EMP|SFM will host Late Nights, a new program giving guests extended visiting hours, live music and drink specials in Sky Church. All exhibitions at EMP|SFM (including featured or special exhibitions) will remain open during Late Nights. Late Nights will occur the first Thursday evening of the month during the museum's summer hours schedule (July 1, August 5 and Sept. 2).
Yoga for Hope begins Saturday, July 10. Nine of Seattle's most renowned yoga instructors will lead the largest outdoor yoga class in a unique fundraiser for the City of Hope. The second annual Yoga for Hope event will take place underneath the Space Needle at Memorial Stadium. In an effort to bring the spirit of health and community together, instructors will guide participants through the practice of 108 Sun Salutations. Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum (EMP|SFM) announces its latest exhibition, Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. Organized by EMP|SFM and in partnership with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy, Battlestar Galactica features three, full-size prop spaceships, iconic costumes, new exhibition films, music and other props from the original and reimagined series.
