Beloved 1927 church hopes to survive another 100 years

Damage from a leaking roof, walls and windows has put a historic building at risk.

Members of the Seattle Church of Christ, Queen Anne Historical Society, Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Seattle and concerned neighbors pulled together two years ago and came up with enough money to reimburse the developer who was just weeks from the demolition date and purchase this rare neo-byzantine building at 2555 8th Ave. W. in Queen Anne.

The respected architect, Harlan Thomas, is also credited with other Seattle City Landmarks including The Chelsea Hotel and The Sorrento Hotel. Once purchased the priority became waterproofing the building to prevent further damage from water intrusion. Last fall the Seattle Church of Christ was awarded a Landmark Challenge grant from 4Culture for $19,779, but raising the matching funds needed to access the grant money has proven to be a difficult barrier.

Concerned parties are hosting a silent and live auction event at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, at the building. With the help of April Brown as auctioneer and Kendra Todd, winner of Donald Trump's Apprentice (Season 3), supporters are very optimistic.

Members of the community can help by attending the auction and RSVPing at www.another100years.com. The cost is $20 in advance, $30 at the door.
