On Saturday, workers from Queen Anne’s Homegrown restaurant (at the corner of Queen Anne Ave and W Boston St) were on strike. Their calls for a living wage and affordable healthcare could be heard from around the block and the picket line caused the location to close for the day. The strike captain explained that workers had voted to unionize last December but have yet to finalize their contracts. While they report progress has been made, they also said they cannot afford to work without healthcare being provided. According to the union’s website, UNITE HERE LOCAL 8 represents 4,000 hospitality workers in Washington and Oregon. They aim to “transform thousands of traditionally low-wage jobs into good, family-sustaining, middle class jobs.” Learn more at www.unitehere8.orgThe strike captain explained that workers had voted to unionize last December but have yet to finalize their contracts.
