Cindy Tan and Isabella Avram, recent eighth-grade graduates from Hamiliton International Middle School and McClure Middle School, respectively, received $2,000 scholarship as the 2022 recipients of the Nico Luiggi Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to two middle school students each year. Carmen Hagios and Ray Luiggi created the scholarship to honor their son Nico Luiggi, who died at the age of 13 in 2018, two months after he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a rollover collision that also killed two of his friends.
At the time of his death, Nico attended Hamilton International Middle School and delivered newspapers for the Queen Anne & Magnolia News.
The scholarship isn’t just awarded based on academic merit. Students must also write a two-page essay talking about their passions in life and plans after high school as part of the application process. Scholarships are awarded each year for tuition expenses at any college, university or vocational training. The scholarship is funded primarily by the family of Nico Luigi, as well as donations from community members. To learn more about the Nico Luiggi Scholarship, go to http://www.nicoluiggi.org.
