A new program called Native Girls Code, funded by a grant from Google and Women’s Funding Alliance, is a game development project that bridges Native culture with Western science, resulting in young Native girls inspired to create websites, online games and virtual worlds.
Native Girls Code provides assistance to 12 young Native women through free workshops, coaching, teaching and role modeling.
The work of Native Girls Code participants will be on display on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Daybreak Indian Cultural Center (3801 W. Government Way) in Discovery Park, during the Blue Jay Brings Back the Moon: A Celebration of Native Arts & Culture community event. The festive event will bring together music, visual and media arts and a program for the community and feature a dinner of local and traditional foods.
The event starts at noon, with a free artists market, featuring traditional and contemporary Native artists. Then, a dinner of local and traditional foods will be served at 5 p.m., followed by a program.
