Pacific Publishing writers receive WPA honors

The Washington Press Association recognized two Pacific Publishing Co. writers for their work with 2010 Communicator of Excellence awards.

Columnist Matthew Wilemski, who writes the “Roundabout” column the third Wednesday of every month, won four awards. In the General Column/Non-Daily Newspaper category, he won second and third places for “Wheels on the Metro Bus Go Round and Round” and “Helping Our Veterans Could Help Unite America,” respectively.

He also placed second in the Sports Column/Non-Daily Newspaper category for “S.O.S.: Support Our Storm (Save Our Shirts!),” and second in the Humor Column/Non-Daily Newspaper category for “2010: The Year in Carols.”

Editor Vera M. Chan-Pool won first place in the Editorial/Non-Daily Newspaper category for the editorial “A New Legacy in the Making.” 

Wilemski’s columns and the winning editorial appeared in the North Seattle Herald-Outlook, Capitol Hill Times, South Seattle Beacon and Queen Anne and Magnolia News.

Chan-Pool also received second-place honors in the News/Non-Daily Newspaper category for the story “South Korean Student Drowns at Madison Park Beach,” which appeared in the August 2010 issue of Madison Park Times, an associate publication.
