Going, going...nope. Not yet.
It's the great Seattle question in these developer-driven days: How long can the charmingly disheveled last? When the object in question is a bookstore the question is usually a no-brainer.
Rumors have been circulating that Horizon Books, residing in the old house at 425 15th Ave. E. since 1971, is about to close.
Maybe speculation has been fueled by Horizon's continuing, big-discount book sale. Still, rumors of Horizon's impending death aren't entirely exaggerated.
"We're having a difficult time day to day, month to month," said owner Don Glover. The 62-year-old Glover also owns Horizon Books north of the U-District. Glover added that he'll decide the fate of both of his stores "pretty shortly."
Glover has been in the book business since he was a teenager. He learned the trade from the legendary, suspenders-wearing Jim Todd at Shorey's way back when.
Never mind the cherry-tree shaded courtyard, the friendly cat Malanga, the shelves piled high with books and the happy accidents, in books and in people, that happen in such a micro-universe: What about converting to online only?
"I would hate that," Glover said.[[In-content Ad]]
