Maleng flag flying

Brandon Lopez won this year's Karen Maleng Memorial Flag design contest, held earlier this month at the Magnolia Community Center.

About 400 people attended the Tun O Fun program Before and After School Multicultural dinner June 2. At the dinner, Lopez was announced the winner. The first runner-up was Caitlin Moore, second runner-up was Max Divine and third runner up was Polina Skrypka. In attendance were Mark and Judy Maleng.

The flag contest was started in 1998 by Micheline Huber, the community center's program director and former day care attendant for Karen Maleng, who was killed in 1989 in a sledding accident. In her honor, each year for the past 12 years, a new flag is flown over Karen's Place, the namesake playground next to the community center.[[In-content Ad]]
