Lovin' the landscape at Howard/Mandville

For the second year - in what the gallery sees as a new tradition - Howard/Mandville Gallery in downtown Kirkland will present its "Love of the Land" landscape show. The show features more than 100 paintings by 31 artists with, some of whom are collected at the international level.

The exhibit runs May 5-31. The opening reception is May 5, from 5:30- 8 p.m.

According to Linda McCrystal, who handles the gallery's press, the exhibit is seen as an "opportunity for Seattle area art collectors to see the largest grouping of the contemporary realism landscapes. Our goal is to allow people to see some really high-quality collectible landscape work," she says.

Local talent in exhibit

There are several local artists represented, including Jim Lamb (Issaquah), Michael Ferguson, Ned Mueller (Renton), Darren Rice (Edmonds) and Xiaogang Zhu (Olympia).

McCrystal notes that there is something for everyone in the show: from photo-realism (Richard Mravik, who is a self-taught artist originally from Slovakia) to Impressionism and Expressionism.

Painting mediums will include oil, watercolor, gouache and acrylic. "We have opposites and everything in between," she says.

Live demos

On May 6, the gallery will host live painting demonstrations, held in and around the gallery, by five of the 31 artists, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Depending on the weather, gallery owner Pat Howard says that the artists may be able to paint outside of the gallery.

"It gives people a chance to watch them as they paint," says McCrystal. "We always liked the idea of adding a little educational opportunity to the exhibits. People can get to know the artists." The public is encouraged to come observe and ask questions.
