ICS wins LWSD Math Olympiad competition
A team of junior high students (coached by Franz Rau) from the International Community School swept the Lake Washington School District's Math Olympiad competition on April 5 for the third year in a row and took home the wandering trophy.
There were three individual and three team events in which they had to match their skills against those of all the other LWSD junior high schools. Six students from each school took part in each event. However, each student could only be part of four events, making it a true team effort for all the schools.
The ICS team won five out of the six events, which covered all aspects of geometry, algebra and arithmetic and gathered the most points, winning the overall competition with 1,483 points. Kamiakin Junior High came in second with 1,307 points, and Inglewood Junior High was third with 1,117 points.
The ICS team included the following hardworking students:
7th-graders Bryan Djunaedi, Roxana Rautu, and Atanas Kirilov.
8th-graders Anupam Choudhary, Alex Esibov, and Edward Jiang.
9th-graders Mathew Zhou, Calvin French-Owen, Sukhdeep Singh, and Alena Rau.
Special thanks goes to Carmen Rautu, the volunteer scorer for the event.

There will be about 400 competitors coming from all over the state at this year's state competition. The National History Day competition will be held in June at the University of Maryland. Only the first two place finishers at the state level will go on to the national competition.
