Spirits were high as volunteers planted and passers by exchanged greetings two Saturdays ago at the Galer and McGraw intersections on Queen Anne Avenue.
The volunteers were Picture Perfect Queen Anne (PPQA) board members and friends; their task was the installation of plants in beds created over the spring and summer with SDOT.
The goal of the "Green Gateways Queen Anne" project was to establish attractive drought-tolerant landscaping on both ends of the upper Queen Anne business district. A sunny morning of raking, digging, planting, and watering was followed by a celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony with the volunteer crew, SDOT officials, business owners and strollers joining in.
Volunteers for the Saturday morning planting included board members Kathy King, Margaret Okamoto, Elaine Talbot, Lori Kent, Patti Hanlen, and Virginia Hand. Additionally, there was Geoffrey Payne, Carol Issac, Shannon Brannon, Candace Carlson, Therese Casper, of SDOT, Ellen Monrad and John Coney from the Queen Anne Community Council, and Bruce Bond from Vertumni Fine Landscaping and Gardening Bond's firm was contracted for maintenance of the gateways and donated a portion of the costs, with the planting design itself donated by Land2c Landscape Design.
SDOT Director Grace Crunican presented certificates of appreciation to PPQA for its efforts with the Queen Anne Pedestrian Improvements.
More money is needed to complete the planting and maintain and water the plants. The PPQA goal is to raise $16,000. This will fill the beds and provide the two years of maintenance necessary for the plants to become fully established. One quarter of the money has been raised through a grant from Office of Economic Development. The PPQA hopes the community will support the remainder. Flyers are available at either McGraw or Galer about how to donate to this project.
You can have your name inscribed on a paver. Visit www.ppqa.org to learn more about making a donation directly and to learn more about the organization.
