Get 'sugared' in Magnolia

Everyday people get their haircut, their eyebrows waxed or their nails done. But sugared? Mention sugaring to Kelly Dermody, a licensed esthetician and owner of Magnolia Skin Care, and she'll set up a chair.

Sugaring is like waxing but without the red sticky skin, hot wax, or excruciating pain, Dermody said. There are no strips, sticks, or double dipping-making the process completely hygienic. This form of hair removal has been around for centuries, developed first  in Egypt using sugar, water and lemon juice.

The natural paste is spread a with a gloved hand against the hair growth and is pulled with the direction of the hair growth, resulting in destruction of the hair follicle, making hair grow back more sparsely.  Sugar is also a natural exfoliant for the skin.

While Sugaring is not completely painless it doesn't have nearly as many side effects as waxing, Dermody noted. Dermody described the feeling of being sugared as a "light pinch or gentle tugging." When asked if the paste smelt or burnt she replied "It smells like sugar, tastes like candy and looks like caramel."

Dermody, who took over Magnolia Skin Care almost five years ago, was surprised by the number of people coming in for sugaring. "More and more people are getting hair removed," and Magnolia Skin Care is one of the only places in Seattle where you can get "sugared."

In addition to sugaring, Dermody offers facials with organic skin care products, microdermabrasion, exfoliating peels, and waxing. Every product she uses is organic, so, she said, 'you could practically eat them."

She runs her business as a one-person shop making the experience more intimate and personal. Magnolia Skin Care is located in the Magnolia village on McGraw right above El Ranchon Mexican Restaurant. Visit www.magnoliaskincare.net for more information.[[In-content Ad]]
