First, to quote an ex-President who suddenly doesn't look so bad these days, let me make one thing perfectly clear. I absolutely refuse to step into the sandbox with the idiotic politicians on all sides who have brought what should have been a simple decision on replacing an earthquake-damaged section of freeway to a grinding, squabbling, finger-pointing, flip-flopping, buck-passing, intensely irritating stop. However, like all Seattleites, I have been asked to render an opinion on this fiasco, via a March 13 "advisory" vote that may or may not mean anything, since Gov. Christine Gregoire ("Oh! I thought they meant a tunnel to the center of the Earth!"), who may or may not have more than one option on her water table, could just act like the whole thing is one more sports stadium to be rammed down our throats.
I've covered countless community meetings in the years I've written for this paper, and it never fails to amaze me how many citizens really don't have a clue about what's going on.An example: Despite literally years of back-and-forth discussions before a design for a new Queen Anne water tower was approved, one member of the Queen Anne Community Council in a recent meeting asked city staffers whether the design issue couldn't be revived. There was no way that was going to happen; work has already begun.

During the evening of Sunday, June 3, a brief storm rolled through the Puget Sound, dumping rain on Magnolia, accompanied by rolling thunder and a little lightning.I came home around 8:30 p.m. from a food-to-go run to find all the lights in our house, and our neighborhood, out once again. Our best guess was that they went out somewhere between 7 and 8. At the risk of leaving myself open to criticism, we were once again in the dark.
The 16th annual Bike the Bluff cycling event will be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 8. This popular neighborhood fundraiser gives participants the option to walk or ride a 4-mile or 6.5-mile loop around Magnolia, then enjoy a neighborhood picnic and a dip in "Pop" Mounger Pool.
The beleaguered FBI has been complaining recently in the press about the way the current government's emphasis on terrorism has affected its crime fighting capacities. Now, it's debatable how effective the FBI ever really was against domestic crime, even in its G-man days when they were led by that famous cross dresser J. Edgar Hoover. And you can also make the argument that local gendarmes are almost holding their own in the fight against local crime.
I live on Queen Anne (at the top of the hill near the Boston and Queen Anne Ave. intersection) and have been appalled at the possibility of a QFC market plus development project being built in the area. My sense is that the neighborhood simply cannot support such a project.
