As the days shorten, get fit (and stay fit) this fall

The fall season has arrived. Shorter, rainy days wearing our fleece jackets, munching on pumpkin scones, sipping egg-nog lattes, watching new reality television shows and attending all those holiday parties. This translates into the average American gaining 1-2 pounds of bodyfat (but sometimes up to 10) by New Year's Day! Gaining 1-2 pounds year after year can really add up to a serious health problem.

BEST High School does Business Week with class

magine this. You are one of 172 students back on a Monday morning after the first week of classes is behind you. Principal Gayle Cudworth introduces to the assembly a man you have never seen before. He is a bank president. His name is Tom Nixon. You and your fellow students clap politely. You are going to learn how to operate a business, he tells you. You are going to evaluate quarterly expenses, production and income. You are going to write a business plan, present a report to stockholders, advertise your company, design and seek investors. And then he tells you your first input is due before the morning is over

Lake Wahington HS starts school year

ummer is over and school has started. All the students are back at school and eager to learn. Well ... all the students are back at school and ... learning (which is obviously the same thing). In fact the school year could not have started on a better foot. Excitement and spirit are at an all time high as the class of '06 starts their last year of high school, the class of '08 enters its first year at LW, and the class of '07 begins a year without such exciting labels as the other two.

Pitchers of love from Lakeview Elementary

Lakeview Elementary School students poured out their hearts to victims of Hurricane Katrina on September 11 as they served up hundreds of cups of "lemon-aid" in front of the school on N.E. 68th Street. The Kirkland kids wanted to put their talents to work to help out in the aftermath of the devastating storm. They whipped up dozens of pitchers of the refreshing drink, waved their signs and extended the Red Cross-bound bucket to drivers, joggers, dog-walkers and bicyclists for several hours.
