Theater Schmeater has picked up the Cassandra family trilogy by playwright Denis Johnson. The Northwest premiere of the first play in the trilogy, "Hellhound on My Trail," opened last week and continues through April 16

Organization directs job seekers toward light rail project

Training for construction workers has begun and is ongoing in Rainier Valley, after a new contract was awarded by the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund and the Seattle Jobs Initiative to help train its residents to work in local construction jobs.Thanks to money from the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund, set up to relieve pressure on small businesses and low income people affected by Sound Transit, and the vision of the Seattle Jobs Initiative, a pre-apprenticeship program will begin training Rainier Valley residents for construction jobs.

Federal Way man murdered at Othello playground

With the incident taking place within a half a mile of Seattle's South Precinct Police Station, officers arrived on the scene quickly and discovered the body of Jason Lee Jennings laying face down in the grass near the basketball court. Seattle Fire Department personnel were called in to help, and they pronounced Jennings dead at the scene around 7:30 p.m.

Second anniversary of the Iraq invasion protested

Thousands of Seattlites braved boughts of heavy rain on Saturday to protest the Iraq war and America's leadership. Several Southeast Seattle peace and political groups, such as the Freedom Socialist Party pictured at left, were on hand to show their opposition.against the war.

Seniors take the spotlight at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center

Plays being presented through March 31 at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center.are written, produced, and performed in by senior citizens. "But Wait... There's More" has monologues based on the lives of the actors, and musical renditions including "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Thank God I'm Old."

Artists sought for Sound Transit's public art program project roster

Sound Transit's public art program "STart" has developed a roster of approximately 500 qualified artists as a resource to the selection process. Applications to the roster are accepted on an ongoing basis. Those wishing to be considered for the two light rail stations mentioned above should submit applications no later than April 29.

Community center helps Grandparents forced to revisit their roles as caregivers

With her children giving up on their parenting duties over 10 years ago, South End resident Dorris Morton found herself shouldering a heavy parenting load. With five abandoned grandchildren suddenly under her roof, Morton realized she needed some solid tips on how to raise young kids.Hearing about a parenting class at the Rainier Beach Family Center, she began attending and immediately saw a need for one that specifically addressed the concerns of older caregivers who have unexpectedly found themselves caring for their grandchildren.

Selected items from Seattle Police Department's South Precinct incident log.An assailant pointed a 12-inch-long "butcher knife" at the worker's chest and then "told him to give him his wallet and car keys." At this point a pregnant woman in her 30s "grabbed his wallet out from his back pocket and took the car keys from his hand." The woman, who stood about 5-feet, 6 inches tall and weighed around 150 pounds, wore a red jogging suit and had shoulder-length hair.

Bad legislation boon to rich developers, blow to low income housing

Last year our city council passed a truly bad piece of legislation expanding the Multi Family Tax Exemption program. This program was originally created to stimulate construction of low-income apartment units in distressed areas. If a developer sets aside 20 percent of the units and prices them to be affordable to people making below a certain percentage of the citywide median income, then that developer will not have to pay property taxes on the whole building for 10 years.

Casa Latina is no menace

Fearmongering and misinformation - that's what characterized prominent opponents to the light rail. Now we're seeing the same tactics applied to Casa Latina coming to Rainier Valley.
