'Pariah' offers an honest, heartfelt look at a gay teen's life

The inner-city drama offers an often endearing look at the difficulties of teen sexuality

The main descriptor that comes to mind for "Pariah" is honest.This is an honest film about an honest protagonist dealing with a realistic situation.  That protagonist is Alike (Adepero Oduye), a 17-year-old African American living in Brooklyn with her father, mother and younger sister. There isn’t much plot in Dee Ree’s directorial and writing debut film “Pariah.” It’s simply a character study of Alike’s day-to-day life, her successes and struggles.

Local Queen Anne team captures third softball title in a row

The American Meter and Appliance men’s softball team is creating a dynasty. The team clinched its third straight Greenlake Men’s Masters Championship title on Sunday, July 24.American Meter got off to a slow start this year, bringing into question as to whether they were going to be able to keep their championship streak alive. But after several rainouts and mid-season setbacks, this team of mainly Queen Anne residents and local business owners peaked at just the right time. 

James Merlino remembered for his smile and generous nature

James Eugene Merlino was a man who loved life and craved activity. The president of American Meter and Appliance, Merlino was a beloved member of the Queen Anne community who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on Aug. 10. He was 64. According to an obituary written by his family and published in The Seattle Times, Merlino was a licensed pilot, dirt biker and expert skier who probably best known as an avid cyclist who had biked across the length of the country many times with family members and friends. He had taken part in the Seattle to Portland ride many times and was known for being able to complete the distance in one day.

Seattle schools seek leadership and future funding sources             

 The search is on for a new Seattle Superintendent of Schools and there are many challenges facing local schools, not the least of which is funding them properly.         Those were some of the messages conveyed during a meeting at Coe Elementary on the evening of Jan. 5, in which Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield joined State Rep. Reuven Carlyle (D-Queen Anne); Seattle School Board Pres. Michael DeBell; and Seattle School Board member Harium Martin-Morris for a talk and a question-and-answer period with parents, teachers, principals and people from the community.
