An MSN.com/Movies feature by Kathleen Murphy, taking its cue from the release of The Tourist but focusing on rather better films. Read it here.
"Moments Out of Time" has been an annual ritual for Kathleen Murphy and me since 1971. We did miss a couple of years early in the millennium, but otherwise it's been our pleasure to memorialize "images, lines, gestures, moods from the year's films" - moments that moved, surprised, and stayed with us. There was never room to do it in Queen Anne & Magnolia News, but of course space isn't an issue on the Interwebs. In recent years our host for this feature has been MSN.com/Movies; you'll find our 2010 effort here. -RTJ

Anyone curious to read further regarding the late Blake Edwards is referred to Kathleen Murphy's 1974 appreciation of The Tamarind Seed, just posted at Parallax View, here. Unfortunately, the film has never been distributed in DVD, and the long-ago videotape was one of those pan&scan jobbies that give you only a portion of the original widescreen images. Still, the movie was a beauty, the third-best on my 1974 year-end list - and who knows, maybe you're among those intrepid souls who scout out such things in cyberland.... -RTJ
In 2010, Criterion released a DVD box set of three silent beauties by Josef von Sternberg, all hard to get a look at in recent years. I wrote about them on assignment from Amazon.com.
The National Society of Film Critics voted its 45th annual awards today, Jan. 8. No surprises, given the way other critics-group awards have been going the past few weeks, but one victory that gives me particular delight.
Most years my own ballots bear little resemblance to the results, and that's the case this time around....
Kathleen Murphy writes about the excellent Peter Weir film The Way Back for MSN.com/Movies, http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie-critic-reviews/the-way-back.2/#Review_0 The 2010 movie got a belated, lacklustre release and little attention. Perhaps it'll find its audience now via Blu-ray and DVD? -RTJ
