A primer for writers, would-be-writers and the rest of us

“Wheel watch” mind is how poet and teacher Holly Hughes describes her personal discipline for paying attention. Hughes, who conducts writing classes at Edmonds Community College, knows whereof she speaks: She fished Alaskan waters for decades and has skippered big boats. Paying attention was not only an art but a survival skill, the way it is in grizzly country.

Farmers markets grow into 'community fix'

'Zero Dark Thirty' on manhunt for realism

What an ambitious and risky task director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal have at hand with their new film “Zero Dark Thirty.” Among other things, probably the greatest problem it faces is the fact that we know how the story ends.

Reuven Carlyle on the coal trains

'Not one Seattle investor would do this deal'

Reuven Carlyle says he can’t shop at the Queen Anne Trader Joe’s on Saturdays without being accosted by constituents concerned about coal trains. Make no mistake: Carlyle’s against them. The 47-year-old state representative from the 36th District and Queen Anne resident says the proposed project just doesn’t pencil out.

Lawmakers continue fight against human trafficking locally

The same Internet that we use to check e-mail and shop on-line has now become a tool used by pimps to increase their profits in the sex trade. As the issue of human trafficking has continued to become more defined over the last decade, Washington state has been at the forefront in pioneering initiatives and other efforts to crack down on modern-day slavery and lend a voice to the voiceless.

'Our Town' gets new spin with Arne Zaslove at helm

Queen Anne director Arne Zaslove thinks “Our Town,” acclaimed as one of the greatest American plays ever written, is cursed: It’s cursed to be performed in gymnasiums, high school drama classes and community theaters where it is sentimentalized, portrayed as a homey and idyllic piece of Americana.
