Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” (based on the popular comic book series by Belgian artist Herge) will no doubt be a crowd pleaser. From the very minute we first see our scrappy, red headed, baby-faced hero, you know you’re going to be in for a treat. “Tintin” is a swashbuckling adventure and the latest movie to use motion-capture animation. It is stuck somewhere between “Indiana Jones” (films which Spielberg served as director) and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” which is all well and good but also serves as a problem.

Beloved Catharine Blaine teacher Karen Helweil dies

Karen Helweil, a beloved teacher at Magnolia’s Catharine Blaine K-8 for more than 20 years, died on Sunday, Dec. 18. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Winterfest merchants collect $634 and 800 pounds of food for local charities

Magnolia’s participating merchants collected a total of 800 pounds of food and $634.58 in cash for charities during the Dec. 9 WinterFest event. Some of the more than 20 businesses in the Magnolia Village that took part in the WinterFest event were collecting canned goods for the Ballard Food Bank. Others were donating a percentage of the day’s proceeds to the Moyer Foundation, which helps kids in distress by providing education and support so they can live healthy, happy lives.
