The danger of racial amnesia

As Black History Month comes to an end and many of us go back to our normal state of racial and historical forgetfulness, it’s a good time to address one of the more difficult racial issues in America. That is, African Americans’ relationship with other minority groups, particularly Asian Americans and Latino Americans.

Families Find It Harder to Cope With Rising Food Prices

It is getting harder to put food on the table, not only for low-income households but for middle-class families as well. Prices have soared lately not just at high-end grocery stores, like Whole Foods or QFC, but also at large chains known for their price competitiveness, like Safeway, Sam’s Club and Costco.

Queen Anne students collect unused electronic gear

Students from the Queen Anne neighborhood are looking for electronic garbage.  The students of various schools are contacting friends and family throughout Seattle, encouraging them to dig through dresser drawers, clear out toy boxes and look anywhere else used electronic devices may be collecting dust.

Celebrate Earth Day The Scientology Environmental Task Force is spearheading a community clean-up in Kinnear Park on Saturday, April 23rd, in celebration of Earth Day 2011. Tools and gloves are being provided by the Parks & Recreation Department.  Refreshments will be on site.  Volunteers will meet at the entrance to the lower park level at the end of Roy Street at 9:15 am.  For more information contact Ann Pearce at 206-284-0604.

I am not ready for a natural disaster - how about you?

Are you ready — really ready?  I was thinking that a few days ago while listening to one of the many experts on television analyzing the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. 

Seattle's own version of Groundhog Day

Even if citizens vote down the tunnel, the state may have the final say

No matter what Mayor Mike McGinn does, or even if the people of Seattle do vote against replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct with the tunnel, it appears that the state could build it under downtown anyway.

Calling all challengers

It looks like all five Seattle City Council incumbents — Bruce Harrell, Jean Godden, Sally Clark, Tom Rasmussen and Tim Burgess — will seek reelection this fall. It’s a daunting task in Seattle to run against and defeat an incumbent.
