Mayor's budget gives way to special interests

City Hall

Last week, Mayor Mike McGinn presented his first budget to Seattle City Council. These are tough economic times, and the mayor needed to make up for a $67 million drop in local tax revenues that normally would have supported programs covered by the general fund, plus significant shortfalls in non-general-fund sources such as user fees, utility rates, state and federal revenue sources.

Living Simply

Last week, it was 113 degrees in Los Angeles - its hottest day ever. The East Coast is flooding. And, yet, there are still people who deny global warming. For instance, there's a man running for Congress who says that our efforts to deal will global warming will enslave Americans. What can we do to wake people up to global-warming issues?

Younger women have got nothin' on me

Guest column

Has it happened yet? Have you been called "ma'am" at the supermarket? Have you woken up and looked in the mirror to find your mother staring back at you? Do you perform an occasional strip-tease during a business meeting as a hot flash comes on? Or have you noticed men staring as you walk past them on the street - not at you as they once did - but at your daughter?

A meeting worth attending

The Bottom Line

Representative government is a lot of work. It requires you to be informed and then go and cast your ballot or raise your voice for or against any number of issues or candidates. Unfortunately, most of us are all too willing to raise our voices whether we are informed or not and participate in a decision that does more harm than good.

Seattle Rep changes are disappointingI'm burning with disappointment. The renovations for the new plaza in front of the Seattle Repertory Theatre, at Mercer Street, are finished. As you enter the Seattle Center campus and approach the theatre you are welcomed by... something resembling a used car lot!

One woman's days in hill country

I just returned from a three-week sojourn in Italy with extended family: an aunt, two cousins, a second cousin and his fiance, and to my joy my daughter.

Director explains Biz Kid$ plan

The $67 million revenue shortfall the city faces, combined with uncertainty about the future, forces us to think creatively and to find new ways to do business.
