Huckabee on the hook for Clemmons cop killings

Well, I had it in mind to write a low-key column about friendship this week but violent, gun-caused events have once again postponed that.

Intrigue of early present discovery

Ramblings

"I think I know where Mom's hidin' the Christmas presents," I said to my little brother, Ron, one wintery Chicago day as we played down in our basement."Where?" he quizzed.

Winter gardening...

Notes from the Garden

Too cold and so soon - the fiery colors of autumn so swiftly gone.

Bravo to The Seattle Times

Editorial 12/9

Just a quick note to acknowledge the importance of great journalism and how it can unite and inform a community like nothing else.

The bargain basement tunnel

Guest Column

To put it simply, the Alaskan Way deep-bore tunnel is being done on the cheap. One cannot do a major project like the tunnel and skimp on safety and capacity. It is also being developed in haste, they call it fast track. It should be called fast bucks for the contractors because such fast-track designs are not adequately vetted/studied and cross-studied. Poor and hasty plans mean that the taxpayers shoulder the burden of extra costs and contractor add-ons.

Police were able to view cell phone footage of the burning stroller taken by a witness.

My stand with the chroniclers of Custer's life

Wilken's Watch

Some eras in our national history stand out more than others. Think Roaring Twenties, almost 100 years gone now, but anyone who has read "The Great Gatsby" or seen grainy old reels of folks doing the Charleston can call up their own picture of the '20s. Fans of "The Godfather" or people whose ancestors liked a drink can immediately call to mind Al Capone, "Our Thing" (Cosa Nostra), the Volstead Act and Prohibition without much effort.

McGinn appointees are just shills for developers

The Right Side

Candidate Mike McGinn said he was the person to re-set priorities at City Hall, make substantial changes and bring new leadership to Seattle.

It's that time of year again: 2009 Media Follies

Seattle Soundings

Welcome to this 14th-annual selection of a few of the year's most over-hyped and underreported local stories. With the news business (especially newspapers) undergoing a not-very-slow collapse (R.I.P. Seattle Post-Intelligencer) and hard-news coverage usually the first victim of tightening budgets, there was more underreported news than ever this year.

Happy retailers and Kennedy

Inside View

Everybody knows things are tough. That is a given. So it is with a tip of my hat that I acknowledge retailers in the neighborhoods who sweep their storefronts and smile just the same. Retailers who still donate their precious time helping needy families and who look to the future with optimism and therefore have a contagious brightness about them.

City Light rate hike comes at wrong time

Editorial 12/16

As winter approaches and daylight's window remains half shuttered, Seattleites will soon feel the cold sting of turning on the lights or an electric space heater. It's going to cost more.

Bloome was on the mark

Letters

Dear Editor: It was quite satisfying reading an article that stated the situation, the illogical movements of the government on different levels, the potential for disaster and reasons for that conclusion.

Raines civil case delayed

The U.S. District Court has pushed back until November 2010 the hearing for Lawton Elementary School principal Beverly Raines, who in February filed a lawsuit with nine other plaintiffs accusing Seattle Public Schools of discrimination based on race age or sex.
