So long, farewellOn June 21, a visitor from Germany bid a temporary auf wiedersehen to his backpack, cell phone, two passports, clothing, $150 U.S. and $150 Euros, which were stolen from his rental car parked in the 300 block of Roy St. Luckily, the unsophisticated thief settled for the bucks and tossed aside most of the other items. Officers found the passports discarded in a nearby trash can, and a passer-by found the rest of the items elsewhere and turned them in.Leaf it aloneSometime between Thursday and Friday June 25, 26,, someone broke all the branches from a tree in the 3000 block of 12th Ave. W.
Unless you're a political wonk or dislike sunshine and prefer to spend your days reading Web sites, you probably haven't heard much about the Seattle City Council races. That's because, for the last several years, you haven't heard much about Seattle City Council. Several incumbent council members lost their seats earlier this decade in part because political opponents seized on one or another topic that, while arguably appropriate, on first blush sounded ridiculous. (Remember Heidi Wills and circus animals?)
Seattle City Council is poised to accept a citywide proposal that allows residents of Seattle to build detached residences, up to 800 square feet, on their property. It's an idea that had been adopted in 1994 in south Seattle but not yet citywide. It is a good idea.
I went up to Vancouver (B.C. of course) the last weekend of June, to watch my daughter run in the Bank of Nova Scotia half-marathon.
In her June 24th column, "Is the Voting Restoration Act a good idea?," Nicole Franklin stated that all legal and financial obligations associated with a conviction "...are an important part of a criminal sentence." I couldn't agree more. However, as the prime sponsor of the Senate version of the bill Ms. Franklin references, I must clarify what the bill does.
Almost every weekday morning, a fellow Magnolia resident, Robert "Rob" Lancaster, wheels his big, red, BMW motorcycle up in front of the Upper Crust Bakery in Magnolia. It sits still, quietly clicking cool with just over 25,000 miles on the clock.

The greatest real-estate story every told: I'm going to leave the guy's name out of it but earlier this year he told me he was moving. The Queen Anner had a very decent house and it had been appraised at $1 million or more. Not untypical in Queen Anne, which despite the economy, continued to bustle real-estate wise for obvious reasons.
The crosswalks on West McGraw Street/32nd Avenue West are extremely dangerous to pedestrians. Many drivers in vehicles will not, and do not give pedestrians walking these crosswalks their "Legal" right-of-way. Many drivers in vehicles do not make a full stop at these stop signs on these corners and frequently run through these stop signs.
