Myopia in Olympia

City Beat

What is it about taxes that makes people so stupid?State lawmakers are currently wrestling with a budget deficit that will inevitably result in the evisceration of any number of essential state programs - a disembowelment of our social safety net (already shredded by years of federal and state cutbacks) that will not only affect lives, but cost lives.

Put a little pepper in your life

"Would you like some fresh-ground pepper on that salad?" asked the food server as the first course of the meal arrived at the table. When I'd nod affirmatively, they'd usually raise a pepper mill that resembled an ornate table leg. "Say when?"

Avery is right

Glenn Avery is spot on ("Aww rats!" 4/8/09). Let the games begin. I am amazed, like a rat in a maze.First of all they couldn't pick up our recycle for three weeks - not until I called both the SPU and Mayor's office. The latter was a waste of time (no pun intended) since he can't even remove snow. Same model - wait until the snow melts to remove it; wait until the garbage rots to deal with it.

Seafood: What you need to know about it

As a dietitian, I recommend eating fresh fish at least once a week. Less than half of all Americans eat fish on a regular basis, and if they do, it's usually at restaurants. This is unfortunate, since fish has significant health benefits. Even the consumption of small portions can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Experts point out that fish oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is the principal benefactor. Cold-water and deep-sea fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring have especially high levels of this fat. This is the upside.

Police Blotter 4/29

MAYBE HE WAS BOREDOn April 16, a prowler was out of his mind or just bored. Either way, the person made their way in through the back door of a woman's home along 34th Avenue West. Nothing was taken, nothing was disturbed. The owner only noticed the intrusion because a light she never leaves on was left on and a door she knew she locked was open. She called the cops who determined there was no sign of forced entry. Cops figured that maybe the woman just forgot to lock up.
