In principle, I guess, one can get addicted to anything. I'm not just talking about drugs, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine or food. People can develop addictions to other people, their work, shopping, television or the Internet. The latter seem especially prone to cause addictive behavior.

District may cut Center School

School makes it on district's ever-changing hit list

Though it's not written in chalk yet, Center School, the alternative high school situated inside the Seattle Center, is now on the list of schools that will merge with another school within the Seattle Schools district.

It's good to see Seattle Schools weighing all its options, hosting workshops and open-to-the-public meetings as it tries to solve overcrowding issues to the north, under enrollment issues to the south and a deflated budget right smack in the middle of the system. The planning and searching for solutions has become a game of musical chairs.

Davis is way off

There are many valid criticisms that can be leveled at the banking industry in the wake of the subprime mortgage collapse but Mike Davis' arguments in "Home-loan system needs fixing" (December 10th) are so porous, they could be mistaken for the Husky football defense.

The state Legislature is expected to argue Washington's somewhat archaic three-tiered system for distributing beer and wine when it convenes Monday, Jan. 12. One of the key points in the current law surely to be contested is the prevention of quantity discounts. That means wholesalers like Costco cannot use its enormous buying power to sell beer and wine for much less than any other retailer or wholesaler.
