The Seattle First Ward, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation in Magnolia will be celebrating its 70th year this weekend at its chapel at 2415 31st Ave. W. in the Magnolia Village.
One of my favorite movies of all times is "Babette's Feast." Essentially, it's a film about cooking, but that's like saying the Michael Phelps story is about swimming. Yes, it's all that - but also so much more.
The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team continued its winning ways on its first road trip of the season last week, going 2-0 in two non-league contests in the Monterey Bay area.
The Seattle International Piano Festival sounds off Sept. 19 at Benaroya Hall, a three-day event drawing judges and competitors from all around the world and will showcase some of the world's greatest talents.
Our lighting directors got it pretty much perfectly right last week. Didn't you find yourself stopping and just basking in the stunningly beautiful autumn light? The morning mists softened the disappointing end to summer, and by mid-day the sun showed signs of some warmth. By the early evening hours we could still continue our summer barbecues amidst the shrieks and shouts of children playing outside, and the light contained none of the summer's haze.
last major hurricane to make a direct hit on Galveston Island and the metropolitan Houston area struck on Aug. 18, 1983. I remember it because I was living in Galveston at the time, working at the University of Texas Medical Branch and living in an apartment two blocks from the seawall and the Gulf of Mexico.
As I walked past the front of the Magnolia Ace Hardware recently, I glanced into the window and saw a grouping of florescent green, big-eyed, life-sized aliens. Although, I guess you do have to stop and ask yourself, just what is 'life-sized' for an alien?
Time magazine's Joel Stein recently discovered that wine is now made in all 50 states. Some folks might shrug and move on, but Stein, an adventurous sort, at least wine-wise, decided to try one wine from each state and rate them. His rating system was simple. There was excellent, good, bad and undrinkable.
I volunteer at Lawton Park where I encounter numerous off leash dogs. When I said "leash please" to one man while his out of control dog sniffed me, he said "do you know who I am?". Dennis Wilken sounds equally arrogant and clueless. He and his well off, educated friends could set an example for other dog owners instead of flouting and trivializing dog leash laws. Every dog owner I encounter believes their dog is special.
If you want to take your dog to a beach in Seattle, forget about it. Seattle City Ordinance 118724 forbids it. Not only is this law overreaching, few residents adhere to it. Go to any beach in the city and you will see plenty of dogs (99 percent of them leashed) joyfully stepping out with their owners.
If you know how to play chess, can speak fluent Arabic or enjoy endurance running, then Coe Elementary School wants to see you at its Volunteer Fair Thursday, Sept. 18.
The 50-foot mural of elephants and apes and other wild animals that adorns the underpass walls at Phinney Avenue North at North 57th Street, and which had received media attention this summer because city crews had painted over it, and then uncovered it after public outcry, has been defaced again.
When women say the b-word, "We're girls, we're fooling around," Joy Behar said on "The View."
