In spite of the cool and rainy (can you believe that late Saturday night rain, followed by an overcast-with-very-few-sun breaks Sunday?) weather, our food crops are in full production mode. Yes, the tomatoes, eggplants and peppers are sulking, but my haricots vert plants and the rambling squash plants are producing much more than this household can consume, and this particular growing/production season is still young. Stacking the zucchini bread like bricks in the freezer helps to alleviate some of the harvest, but upon opening the freezer in November I can only hope that there will be a broader range of 'treasures' from the 2008 harvest.
Oh-my-God! Angelina and Brad are negotiating to sell pictures of their new twins to one of the celebrity gossip rags!
In less than 100 days we will make the final choices of this long campaign season.
Like most folks, I am a mixed bag. I've lived long enough to be very wary of anyone over the age of 10 who is a promoter of absolutes. Life is gray. Every dark cloud does have a silver lining. Unfortunately, damn near every silver lining borders another dark cloud.
By now you may have noticed that some items on your supermarket shelves are smaller, and yet the price you pay for them remains the same if not higher. You're not hallucinating. It's true. Containers of Dreyer's ice cream are now 1.5 quarts when they used to be 1.75. But you're still paying for the 1.75 quart size. Unilever Foodsolutions also shrunk its Country Crock margarine by three ounces. Kelloggs downsized a bunch of its cereals.
By describing The Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run and Walk as "over before most participants even remotely approached the finish line" Page Level ignores and diminishes the participation of the walking 'racers.' The real ending occurred a little over 100 minutes after the starting gun was fired when a small group of older citizens walked across the finishing line. Among these was the oldest racer, an 89 year old gentleman who deserves to be celebrated as an inspiration to all of us who live in this community and elsewhere.

A proposed ballot measure that would ban investment of city pension funds in companies that profit from war and occupation has run into stiff opposition.Specifically, Initiative 97 would ban investments in companies such as Halliburton and its subsidiaries doing business in Iraq, which would normally be a no-brainer for liberal Seattle voters. But I-97 also would prevent investments in companies such as Caterpillar doing business in "the occupied and besieged territories of West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights" in Israel. And that second provision has created a political minefield that has divided Democrats in the 36th District, which covers the Denny Regrade, Queen Anne, Magnolia, Ballard and parts of Fremont, Phinney Ridge and Greenwood.
Though she didn't know what prostate cancer was at the time, Chloe Cordery, 10, knew she wanted to help raise money for the cause. With her new best friend, Ann Jones, who moved in next door only two months before, Chloe recently raised a total of $33.71 - all from merely asking passers-by near the two girls' Wedgwood homes.

It only seems fitting that M.J. Feet, the University District's Birkenstock store, would focus on, well, feet. But the store's owner, Melanie Grimes, put it best: "We see people from all walks of life," she said - no pun intended.
