With the closure last spring of All for Kids Books & Music, a longtime children's bookstore located in the University District, the number of local specialty bookstores seemed to all but disappear due to the struggle against bigger corporate stores like Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and Borders. But, on July 4, Mockingbird Books, a new children's bookstore, opened in the Green Lake neighborhood at 7220 Woodlawn Ave. N.E. with the mission of reaching out to the community and encouraging children to read.

MARSHALLBOOK: John Marshall Alternative School, 520 N.E. Ravenna Blvd., published "It's Supposed to Be About Happiness" with an accompanying CD for its third and final year. The school closed its doors for good last June.The book features the stories and poetry by Marshall students, who worked with 826 Seattle, a nonprofit writing center that helps students develop their writing skills.Local radio personality and writer John Moe also worked with the students and wrote an introduction for the book.The book, along with the previous two books, is available at 826 Seattle, 8414 Greenwood Ave. N.
The Seattle School District has shifted gears in its approach to narrowing and potentially eliminating the achievement gap between white students and students of color.District Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson has done that by eliminating the 4-year-old, controversial Department of Equity, Race and Learning Support, according to Nicole Johnson, a teacher and equity team member at Alternative School No. 1 at Pinehurst in North Seattle.School district spokesperson David Tucker said the efforts would continue: "We're not eliminating the work but infusing that work throughout the system."Johnson, the teacher, was dubious. "I don't know how else this work can continue," she said. A major change in the district is now taking a top-down approach to fixing the problem, rather than sticking to a teacher-up stance, she added.
