Getting a little behind in the gas-crisis era

I never thought that turning the key in the ignition of my vehicle would be a financial commitment with enough stress attached to it to make me run for a bag of chocolate or a financial advisor. Actually, a financial advisor who handed out chocolate would be my first choice. Stress of this nature has historically been reserved for decisions on whether I could afford to purchase a house, not whether I could afford to buy my little girl a Happy Meal because I still need to fill my gas tank. According to AAA, gas prices are up a whopping 21 percent since last year. My paycheck has definitely not kept up, but I estimate that my chocolate consumption has increased exponentially.

Departing Fremont businesses break down rumor mill

Rumors thrive in most communities, including Fremont. Our small business district has a rumor mill that works tirelessly and with sometimes destructive consequences.Pete Brown, owner of Brown's Cooperstown, moved with his wife from Moscow, Idaho, to Seattle nine years ago. At that time, he also moved his business to 4258 Fremont Ave. N. Last month, he moved it again, to 115 W. Galer St., Suite B, on Queen Anne.Pete deals in sports cards and some collectibles. "This is not a drop-by business; it is a destination business," Pete explained. Customers "know I have what they collect," and they seek out his store wherever he locates to find cards he carries.Packing up and moving nine years of accumulated product and memorabilia took hard work, but after the move, Pete felt hopeful about the forced clean-out and reorganization of his stock.Pete firmly denied the rumor that he moved because his landlord demanded high rent increases.

Taking care

REALLY THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU SEND YOUR OLDER FAMILY MEMBERS Early in my life I watched one of my grandparents die of cancer over a period of a few months. We all eventually find some way to come to grips with the idea that death is holding a ticket for us all, but those early experiences stay in the mind.

Notes from the Garden: A slight pause...

The recent absolutely perfect weather took a slight pause this last week, much to everyone's annoyance. The 50-ish degree nights, perfect for a sound sleep, with low 80-ish late afternoons and evenings, perfect for getting those tomatoes to move toward the salad bowl, took a nosedive. It was downright chilly, with afternoon temperatures not even reaching the low 70-ish range. So, all the recent growth push in the garden stopped dead in its tracks, except, of course, the zucchini plants!
