Talking about the weather isn't safe anymore

My mother grew up poor. Her mother died when she was 12, of tuberculosis, a health scourge back in the early 20th century. Naturally, I never met my maternal grandmother, she was gone long before I was even a twinkle in anybody's eye. My grandfather raised four kids by himself, through the Great Depression. The family of five lived in what used to be called The Bottoms, very close to the Ohio River. During the flood of 1937, they lost everything. My mother was a high school junior then.

Another ugly election move

It appears that we're in for another ugly election thanks primarily to the knee-jerking, neo-conservative, right-wing mouth breathers who think GOP stands for "God's Own Party."

Oily justice for the world's richest industry

Last week, in a 5-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court decided, in a case that may set a precedent for generations, that corporate crime really does pay.

Stop doing stuff... in the name of the safety patrol!

I think it's safe to say that crime always increases during the summer months. This is because I assume that most criminals curl up under their quilts and watch "Dancing With The Desperate American Idol Gladiators" seven nights a week during the other months of the year.

Police report for 7/2-7/9/08

The driver told the officer he was taking the Mason jar full of marijuana to the Snoop Dog concert to sell to Snoop Dog.

Key Arena's future looks cloudy

It might be two years from now or next season, but barring an unlikely buy-back scenario involving Steve Balmer and friends, most would agree that the Seattle Supersonics are out of here.
