Mom's day for mom

Christmas of course is a long gone casualty of consumerism. In it, there are moments of purity, but for the most part, it's original intent has been all but vaporized.

Edible gardening

VEGETABLE GARDENING EASIER THAN YOU THINK Between the cold blustery rains, the snow, sleet and thunderstorms we've seen paltry few mild and sunny days this year. Spring hasn't allowed us to stop and smell the flowers.

The Bard's birthday and the origin of quotes

GOD, FOR HARRY, ENGLAND, AND ST. GEORGEI have misquoted the above lines for years always putting England first. The correct quote is, God, for Harry, England, and St. George. I stand duly corrected. But lets forget about Harry for the moment and concentrate on George. St. George's day came and went relatively unnoticed, April 23. St. George is the patron saint of England, as is St. Patrick for Ireland, St. Andrew for Scotland, and St. David for Wales.

Queen Anne restaurant will leave you howling

How to Cook a Wolf. Wait. How to Cook a Wolf? Yes, that's right - and you'd be crazy not to see what all the excitement is about. Ethan Stowell, owner of Union Restaurant and Tavolata, has once again proven his brilliance with Italian food. Even Food and Wine Magazine agrees. The magazine is honoring him with its highest award of Best New Chef. Needless to say, Stowell, along with his newest restaurant, is having an extremely rewarding year.

Brownlee rocks the house in grueling I Puritani: 3 ½ hour opera a Seattle delight

Bellini's "I Puritani" throws down a seemingly impossible gauntlet to its four central performers: Sing with all the beauty expected of bel canto opera, the brilliant vocal technique and full voices, even though the score is particularly difficult, and, by the way, the tenor must hit a stratospheric F, a rare feat.

Around Here: The changing view from the Hill

On a good day, if you look downtown pretty much anywhere along the west slope of Capitol Hill you can see Lake Union, Queen Anne Hill, the Space Needle and, on a good day, the Olympics. But such views may be far less permanent than the mountains. As some - but possibly not too many Hill residents are aware - changes to the zoning in South Lake Union could have a dramatic effect in how much of Capitol Hill sees when it looks out the window.

Coming Out of the Darkness: Seattle to host suicide prevention walk in June

"We had a guy jump last night," Seattle FRIENDS founder Ryan Thurston said. He was referring to Thursday, April 17, when a man committed suicide by jumping off the Aurora Bridge, which connects the Fremont and Queen Anne neighborhoods. It is the second deadliest suicide bridge in the country, surpassed only by the Golden Gate in San Francisco.FRIENDS (Fremont Individuals and Employees Nonprofit to Decrease Suicide) is an organization dedicated to eliminating suicides from the bridge. It was founded to raise money for family and friends of bridge jumpers but switched its focus to suicide prevention after realizing no action was being taken to stop the problem. On average, someone leaps from the bridge once every three months. Since its construction in 1931, more than 230 people have jumped and died. More than half of the victims land on the busy intersections, parking lots and pavement below.Overall, 207 people in King County took their own lives last year.FRIENDS is working closely with the city and state to create a suicide barrier on the bridge. This year, members of the organization are also excited to take part in the 20-mile Out of the Darkness overnight walk hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
