By George, it's time to celebrate St. David

"For God, Harry, England and St. George!" Ah, not this time, mate. March 1st was St. David's Day, the patron saint of Wales, and a day when Captain Llewellyn, the Welshman of Shakespeare's Henry V, recommended that every Welshman wear a leek in his cap. Though the lowly leek is an ancient vegetable and greatly prized in soup and other culinary delights, it hardly compares with the shamrock. So, while thousands of Seattleites of Irish origin (and thousands more of would-be Irish) celebrated the shamrock and St. Patrick Monday, the Welsh celebration of St. David's on March 1st was overlooked.

Moliére's 'Miser' a modern mix

Baudy and hilarious period piece still holds true today If Moliére were alive today, he'd be a prime-time headliner on Comedy Central. Though he wrote in the 17th Century, he is considered by many to be the comic master of modern drama. Seattle Shakespeare's current production of "The Miser" proves the point. That's not to say that this play is exactly "The Miser" Moliere presented. Whereas Moliére produced satire that was barbed but subtle, Seattle Shakespeare offers us exuberant farce laced with buffoonery. Moliére sought the stylish laugh, this production goes for the guffaw. It uses a translation by David Chambers enriched with au courant references. With those tools, director Robert Currier has crafted a sidesplitting romp for modern audiences.

Area hospitals take part in Cord Blood Program

In the Feb. 20, edition of this paper I talked about citizens' responsibility in donating blood to save lives and meet the daily demand for blood and blood products needed in the Puget Sound Region. Well, the Puget Sound Blood Center and Northwest Tissue Center also want citizens to be aware of the Blood Center's nationally recognized Cord Blood Program. Mothers-to-be should be aware that they possess the ability to donate life saving stem cells that can be extracted from umbilical cord blood, as well as placental blood, after the birth of their baby.

Everything in moderation

ion - including moderation," a patient of mine once pointed out to me explaining his reasons for taking a break from the diet regimen I had prescribed for him. I like it when such nuggets of wisdom are thrown my way. It brings things back in perspective. In my experience, drastic measures result more often than not in drastic failures. I have long been a believer in small steps rather than grand resolutions, especially when significant and lasting lifestyle changes are required.

A Haunting at the Henry: Four exhibits take viewers to the mortal edge

Installations, photographs, funeral wreaths - however eclectic your tastes, there's a good chance you'll find something that interests you in the current roster of exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery. My favorite of the current shows is "Kadar Attia: New Work." Attia grew up within a Muslim Algerian family in the banlieue outside of Paris that are home to many immigrants. The banlieue are unpleasant suburbs where unemployment rates are astronomical and crime is rampant. In recent years, they have been the sites of bitter riots. The emptiness, wealth/poverty, power/weakness themes that are predominant in Attia's installations and video reflect this background.

Theater Preview: The Diary of Anne Frank

Like most young women, Lucy DeVito first encountered "The Diary of Anne Frank" as an early teenager, a school assignment for a book report that drew her in with its drama and surprising accessibility. The half-Jewish 14-year-old readily identified with the Anne of 50 years ago. Aside from the author's frightening environment, DeVito reflects, "She was just like I was at the time." That commonplace sentiment seems prescient now that DeVito is portraying Anne Frank in the Intiman theater's season opener. At 25, the appearance of the petite, doe-eyed brunette recalls the faded pictures of the creative teen whose account of hiding from Nazi authorities continues to touch the world.

Shall We Dance? Pacific Northwest Ballet's Director's Choice is a bold offering

he first thing artistic director Peter Boal emphasizes about the Pacific Northwest Ballet is that no single program in the season completely defines it. The second thing is that the Director's Choice program definitely shows off the company's cutting edge. "This is the most contemporary program of the year," Boal said. Director's Choice runs through March 22 and is wildly ambitious with three PNB premieres. Part of the mission for building the repertory in Seattle is to add the works of established masters like Ulysses Dove and William Forsythe, Boal said. The other part of the mission is to encourage younger choreographers such as Edwaard Liang and Paul Gibson.

Sleep clinics help patients say good night to sleep disorders

It is common knowledge that most adults need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but that can often be difficult to achieve. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, about 40 million people in the country suffer from some form of a sleep problem. Sometimes these can get disruptive enough to be classified a sleep disorder. To help people with these disorders, sleep clinics have opened up across the country. One such clinic is the Sound Sleep Health, located in Northgate.

C89.5-FM goes digital to keep listeners dancing

Students are at the forefront of the technology revolution, so it is no surprise that Nathan Hale High School's radio station C89.5 (KNHC-FM), recognized for its dance music, has just gone digital. "Going to digital radio is unlike HDTV: It doesn't mean high-definition; it means hybrid of FM and digital, out of a hybrid transmitter," explained Gregg Nielson, the general manager at C89.5. "This is the radio of the future," he added. "Now, there are about 1,500 stations that have gone digital."

Softball a big hit with seniors

A sedentary lifestyle is dangerous at any age, but at some point, many of us realize that strenuous habits can become the real risk. When you finally reach that age, though, it might be hard to tell. You might even find yourself playing softball at 85 years old, like Milt Bjorklund."Well, Larry [Kirchner, co-coach of Seattle Sting] called me up and asked if I would.... I didn't plan to, but here I am," Bjorklund said. Seattle Sting, the only competitive senior softball team in the city, has been around in different incantations for the last 20 years. The Wallingford Community Senior Center is host to the only two senior softball teams in all of Seattle: Seattle Sting and Seattle Too. Some career players, such as Bjorklund, remember when there were four teams in the city.
