Violence and our sports culture

I'm not talking about right or wrong. I am talking about practice, reality, and custom. Let's begin with football. San Diego Charger LaDainian Tomlinson said recently on 60 Minutes, "Each time you play a game, it's like being in a car wreck. So that's 20 car wrecks." Football players, especially professionals, are expected to hit their opponents. In Little League, high school, college and professional football, does any coach ever say, "Don't hit too hard"? A bit too light does not get the desired goal, but a hit too hard can hospitalize a player, paralyze, or kill.

At the end of the trailblazer's trail

Once upon a time when someone said that they are doing something for, or with, the African American community, everyone knew you meant the Central Area of Seattle. Obviously that is no longer the case, and it's difficult to find a geographic region that is predominantly African American. So many people are under the assumption that the African American community no longer exists.I beg to differ, and I challenge all of you who read this to realize that Seattle has always been a pioneer city and trailblazing is what those who came out here became proficient at.

STRESS!!!!

Yes, I know, you read about stress frequently at this time of year. But we, as humans, need to be reminded over and over in order to remain aware of ourselves and the world around us. It is the season of Christmas and Hanukkah. Whatever the rituals and traditions that are part of your spiritual beliefs, it is hard to escape the season of stress.

Modern-day travel: covering distances without getting away

Travel used to be a simple matter. You traveled for business or pleasure. If you traveled for pleasure, you were on vacation. For most people, that meant taking their families on the road and staying at a particular destination until it was time to return home. Locations were mostly chosen because of their accessibility and convenience. Going on vacation was like an annual ritual, often limited to a few favorite spots that became like a home away from home.

Walk like a man: 'Jersey Boys' is tops among touring musicals

The Four Seasons like to think they put New Jersey on the map. And maybe they did, if the national tour of the 2006 Tony-winning musical "Jersey Boys" is any indication. The production lands somewhere between "Dreamgirls" and "Goodfellas" territory. But from the minute these Jersey boys start singing, the magic begins. The virtuoso cast lifts your spirits with their talent, energy and charisma. This is one of the best touring musicals Seattle has seen in the last few years. Mainly because of the supercharged efforts of its four leads: They make it look easy, and do so while recreating the distinctive sounds and personalities of the legends they're portraying.

Elmer Emerson Stordahl

...who built two homes for his family and left a legacy of delight Elmer Emerson Stordahl mentioned numerous times in his early and mid-80s that he thought it would be nice to live to be 90. He came very close. Mr. Stordahl, a resident of Magnolia for more than half a century, died Sept. 24; tomorrow, Dec. 20, would have been his 90th birthday. Family and friends celebrated his life at a memorial service at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church on Sept. 27, and on what would have been his 90th anniversary, family members plan to gather and celebrate his memory.

Coat crusade

Queen Anne Girl Scout Troop 2770 recently set up a coat drive to benefit two local charities: Queen Anne Helpline and the Baby Boutique. The service project was very rewarding for the girls. They learned that by working hard and together they could make a difference "one coat at a time" for families in need. The troop, which numbers 34 girls between the ages of 6 and 10, collected 167 coats and presented them this past Friday to the Helpline's Pat Sobeck at Coe Elementary School.
