Teen Read Week continues to draw young readers

CENTRAL AREA - Teens have plenty of options for entertainment: gaming, social networking sites, TV On Demand, and much more. So how do libraries stack up? Better than ever. According to two studies recently conducted by the American Library Association (ALA), teen library usage is flourishing due in part to efforts such as Teen Read Week, held this year from Oct. 14-20.

Homelessness event needs hundreds of volunteers

United Way of King County is seeking volunteers to help with the Unite to End Homelessness Community Resource Exchange on Nov. 13 and 15. This community-wide event will provide as many as 1,300 homeless individuals with immediate access to health services, housing referrals and other critical social services.

Clarence (Tom) Washington

Passed away on Oct. 28. Born Aug. 11, 1930 in Covington, Ky. to Roosevelt and Ciely Ada Washington, Clarence is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lavonia (Zeumault); children, Dirk, Cheryl, Shawn and Nicole; 12 siblings, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a multitude of in-laws, extended family and friends.

Zoo's draft annual plan available for public review

The Woodland Park Zoo's draft annual plan is currently available to the public. The annual plan is submitted to the superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation as specified by the Zoo Operations and Management Agreement between the city of Seattle and the Woodland Park Zoo Society.

The Rainier Valley Chamber of Commerce takes time out of its monthly member luncheon to honor a South End student it feels reflects some of the best traits our diverse community exhibits. During the Nov. 1 RVCC meeting in the Rainier Community Center chamber members hosted Hawthorne Elementary School Fifth grader Eriqua Collins to lunch catered by the Columbia City Tutta Bella before honoring her with a certificate of achievement.

Up with Kvichak

Over there across the Ship Canal along the foot of Queen Anne Hill, Fremont Rotary Club of Seattle has given its annual Vocational Award to Kvichak Marine Industries, a 25-year-old leader in design and construction of aluminum workboats with more than 125 employees. Specifically, the company was honored for its work in developing its own training programs for welders. In this, Kvichak principal Brian Thomas acknowledged that the genesis of the program was a problem shared by many Northwest companies: "In the last year, it has become acutely problematic to find skilled workers.

Commanding General, King Rat

Kim Jones at the Henry STICKS AND COAT HANGERS, mud and electrical tape, children's toys and chicken wire - one never knows what will appear in a Kim Jones sculpture. And, because his two-dimensional pieces are frequently reworked over time, one doesn't know from year to year what form the drawings or photographs will take. The current retrospective at the Henry gives ample evidence of this diversity. It also exemplifies their somewhat startling and symbolic nature.

Fetherston Gallery hits 10-year mark

It's a notable achievement. In September, the Ballard/ Fetherston Gallery celebrated its 10th anniversary. In anticipation, the gallery was closed during July and August for a major facelift.The summer months were spent expanding into a newly vacant adjacent space into what is now the largest commercial gallery on Capitol Hill.

Balagan's B Side is a dose of sexy Suave

Although Capitol Hill is supposed to be all about nightlife, the folks at Balagan Theatre felt the after-hours theater scene needed a little boost. "Theater Schmeater is still doing their stuff, and there's some other shows around, but it felt to us like the late-night theater was rapidly disappearing from Capitol Hill," said Balagan founder Jake Groshong. "It felt like something was missing." With a new performance space at 1117 E. Pike St., it also felt like Balagan had a stage to offer. So the group has created "B Side," a program of late night entertainment for the Hill's party crowd.
