God, if He or She exists, is an ironist. And maybe, I fear after 30 years as a reporter, an occasional sadist. The irony is implicit in our daily lives. How many times have I, in just three years, told a playing partner after a good golf shot how good I'm getting, and then within seconds lost a ball to the train tracks below Interbay's sixth and seventh holes? It's the same with column writing. Just two weeks after I gave the Seattle Police Department an attaboy for their relative efficiency (compared to the Cincinnati Police Department), all hell breaks loose.

The return of The Kid

Had it been a movie, it would have been billed as the awkward return of a wayward son. Ken Griffey Jr.'s return to Seattle nearly eight years after being traded provided a sense of drama, certainly, but also a sense of closure. What might have been a hostile occasion marked by an endless chorus of boos a la Alex Rodriguez instead evolved into an unrelenting love fest. <br

Teens making metaphors at the Frye

There seems to be a lot going on at the Frye Art Museum these days. The 25-year retrospective of David C. Kane entitled "Fiat Mambo" and the exhibit "Anxious Objects: Willie Cole's Favorite Brands" are visual feasts which both delight and enlighten a wide range of viewers. A lesser-known activity of the Frye is its art education program. It is through outreach that all museums try and snag the next generation of potential visitors, and at the Frye they are trying harder to attract the attention of the most technology literate generation the planet has ever seen: teenagers.
