The return of 'Cthulhu'

In 2005, two ambitious young men rented a spooky old warehouse on 14th Avenue and set off to explore the dark secrets of making a low-budget horror film, and just as they started their work on an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "Shadow over Innsmouth," the Capitol Hill Times caught up with director Dan Gildark and screenwriter Grant Cogswell to talk about the experience.Nearly two years later, the movie "Cthulhu" received its world premiere at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival. Meeting up once again with Gildark and Cogswell at the festival, we talked to the two filmmakers about shooting in Seattle and Astoria, working with Tori Spelling and the cost of setting a man on fire.

The following appealable decision has been made based on submitted plans: Short Subdivision to create six unit lots conditionally granted. The hearing examiner must receive appeals of this decision no later than June 21.

That's it! I give up! Obviously, if I want a dance partner this summer I can't simply wait to be asked. I've got to do something, and I've decided that something - as I clench my jaw and square my shoulders - will be dreaded Internet dating. I will resign myself to standing alongside the information superhighway, figuratively, with a sign 'round my neck declaring my desperation, and my hope that someone interesting throws his name in my cup.

Building Up

Volunteers build a three-bedroom, two-bath house at the Fremont Fair for Habitat for Humanity, United Way and Solid Ground (formerly the Fremont Public Association). The framework was later disassembled and moved to Snoqualmie Ridge.

Seattle pigs out with Pigs on Parade

Downtown Seattle has gone to the pigs, thanks to a cadre of local artists and sponsors. The 100 painted pigs dotting the city commemorate Pike Place Market's 100th anniversary. Green Lake artist Doug Keith created two of the pigs.

SCHOOL Notes

The Seattle School Board is allowing Seattle high school students to ride King County Metro buses to school instead of the traditional bus, saving the district nearly $1 million per year. Under the plan, which would be phased in over three years, Roosevelt High School students will start next school year

A rainy morning didn't stop volunteers from Catharine Blaine School, the local office of Windermere Real Estate and the neighborhood from tackling a preliminary landscaping project last Friday, June 15.

Celebrate Capitol Hill's independence

The second annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic takes place on Wednesday, July 4, from noon to 5 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park The celebration will include music, food, kids activities and an opportunity to gather in one of the city's best parks.

MCC supports Farmers Market 'Helping Harvest'

Food bank clients in Magnolia can now receive Helping Harvest vouchers to use for shopping at the Magnolia Farmers Market. This summer's voucher program is funded by donations from the Magnolia Community Club and the Magnolia Community Center Advisory Council.The $2 vouchers are given away free to families in need by Catharine Blaine K-8 and Lawton Elementary schools as well as Daybreak Star Center.

Funeral home donates organ with heart

In the sweltering aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many rescue personnel were nationally celebrated as heroes. Some volunteers' efforts, though essential to the city's recovery, were waylaid in the media frenzy for visions of hope. Gina Landerholm, director at Bleitz Funeral Home on the northern edge of Queen Anne, responded to a call for funeral professionals immediately after the disaster. She spent two weeks visiting homes, hospitals and other buildings, recovering victims of the hurricane and relocating their bodies to a holding area, eventually reuniting them with their families.
