Dozens of shadow puppets are visiting the Phinney Neighborhood Center.The exhibit, "The World of Shadows: Shadow Puppets," features dozens of puppets chosen from the Northwest Puppet Center's (NWPC) collection. The free exhibit, in the center's gallery, opened June 1 and continues through June 29.

HEALTH notes

❚ TRANSIT OPTIONS: King County Metro will provide more frequent bus service to CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL & REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER, 4800 Sand Point Way N.E., as part of a new five-year initiative to encourage more hospital employees to leave their cars at home. Metro will add 63 new trips to Routes 25 and 75, beginning with its scheduled Sept. 22 service change. These trips will run at least every 30 minutes, seven days per week.

RAINIER VALLEY - The Rainier Little League playoffs started with a bang last Saturday as the All-City Fence Green Falcons rallied in dramatic fashion to score a stunning 10-9 victory over the Nelson Trucking Rockets in opening round Minors Division action at Rainier Playfield.The game was exhilarating for the Green Falcons, and heartbreaking for the Rockets.

Nick Shiflet isn't as whacked as you think he might think he is.Shiflet - a.k.a. The Shifter, a.k.a. Cookin' Kitty, a Seattle artist with an hourlong show on public access television - says he vacillates on the subject of his own perceived weirdness and idiosyncrasies."I go up and down thinking I'm strange," he says with just the hint of an ironic smile. "Sometimes I think I'm weird, and sometimes I just think I'm a normal person and everybody must think this way."

Poet laureate's BIG show builds community

A children's musical playing now at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center will showcase the infectious poetry of the first children's poet laureate, Jack Prelutsky. His poetry, adapted by Columbia City resident and playwright Ellen Cooper, has inspired children across the country. A Seattle resident, Prelutsky wrote Something Big Has Been Here, a collection of poems with outrageous characters and vivid imagination, in the late 1980s. Cooper wrote the musical with Joseph Seserko for Youth Theatre NW on Mercer Island two years ago.Something Big Has Been Here will run from June 1-17 at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center, 3515 S. Alaska St.; 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays 7 p.m.

Mayor recognizes strong middle school students

Mayor Greg Nickels recently awarded this year's scholar awards to 24 middle school students for service to their respective schools and communities. Based on a criteria of overcoming major obstacles or meeting challenges, giving back to the community and maintaining good academic standing, the students received $500 each for further education or their charity of choice.
