The recent flap over who is/was the greater giver, Bill Gates or Mother Teresa, is a perfect example of what's wrong with the modern world, U.S.A. division.Seems a businessman, Whole Foods' John Mackey, asked the question and then answered it himself. He awarded the charity crown to Bill Gates, claiming Gates helped far more people than Mother T.

Composting in the city

Thursday night. Pizza night. Who doesn't like pizza night? Well, maybe the people responsible for making sure the pizza trash is taken away and disposed of without hurting the environment.Normally, when a pizza is finished, the box gets crushed and shoved into the garbage. Eventually, it ends up in a landfill somewhere in Oregon where it should decompose and add some rich nutrients to the soil. That turns out to be true only if oxygen can circulate through the landfill.

A 'Souvenir' under the spell of music

Mrs. Florence Foster Jenkins ... Never was there a singer so committed to her music who was so bad at making it. And you can see her reincarnated at ACT in its current production, "Souvenir." Though this may not sound like an endorsement, I am here to tell you that this is one of the funniest plays to hit Seattle this year. When Patti Cohenour, playing the tone-deaf Mrs. Foster Jenkins, first opens her mouth in song, the effect is stunning. And each new assault convincingly reinforces the idea that nothing else could sound quite so bad.

Independents: heart of the American dream

Since the early days of video rental I have patronized locally owned, neighborhood video stores. At that time, the early 1980s, independent video stores were it. Chain stores did not exist. Times have changed: Independents are no longer the only game in town, and I sometimes wonder if the market still has a place for small, locally owned shops. A recent conversation with the owners of several locally owned video stores allayed my misgivings. "We've been told we were on our way out ever since we began," remarked Craig Wilson, owner of Video Isle in Fremont, "and here we are."
