LGBT seniors face unique aging challenges

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors face the same fears and challenges as any other older adult. They struggle with health problems, live on limited incomes and worry about losing their independence.But unlike their heterosexual peers, they're also confronted with unique issues that can compromise their health, quality of life and security down the road, according to the Healthy Aging Partnership, a coalition of 35 Puget Sound-area government and nonprofit organizations dedicated to the health and well-being of older adults.

SIFF hires new senior programmer

Francisco at Castro Theatre, will primarily focus on programming the new SIFF Cinema in the Nesholm Family Lecture Hall at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. "Anita Monga is one of the best programmers in the country," said Spence, "[her] credentials are unprecedented. She has a wealth of relationships, contacts, knowledge and impeccable taste, that will be instrumental in establishing a respected film exhibition program at our new SIFF Cinema."

SIFF 2007 gets ready for its closeup

Even though the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival utilizes theaters throughout Seattle, its heart remains on Capitol Hill."We would never move the festival off Capitol Hill," said SIFF managing director Deborah Person.However, this year, SIFF is trimming its Capitol Hill presence, giving up the smaller Broadway Performance Hall in favor of the new 400-seat SIFF Cinema at McCaw Hall.

Paul Raymond

Paul Doney Raymond, cofounder of The Northwest School on Capitol Hill, died on Thursday, May 10, of complications from congestive heart failure which had been triggered by a sudden infection.Mr. Raymond was born on Jan. 3, 1932, and grew up in Kansas. A historian and educator, he had a 50-year high-school teaching career in California and Washington. His formative years during the Depression, his Korean War service and his participation in the civil rights movement, informed his teaching and brought history to life for his students

Actor brings own African perspective to local play about apartheid

Racial discrimination no longer exists legally in the United States; however, racism itself is still rampant in today's society. At least, this is what Canada Leigh, co-star in Seattle Public Theater's production of "Master Harold...and the Boys," believes. Leigh plays the role of Sam, a black South African during 20th-century apartheid.

❚ New building: Runberg Architects is building a seven-story, mixed-use building in Lake City, which will have 135 dwelling units, 14 live/work units and parking. All units are slated for market-rate housing. North Canal Office Park, a three-story building at 146 N. Canal St., to Wright Devco Inc. for $8.28 million.The Blume Co. had developed the 33,000-square-foot building in 1989.

Be part of the county's political candidate selection

Do you want to have a hand in what's really going on? The Municipal League of King County is looking for volunteers to participate in its annual candidate evaluation program this June and July. Volunteers will help interview potential candidates for Seattle City Council, the King County Council, Port of Seattle Commission and school board and local races throughout the county.

South Precinct officers enjoy annual appreciation dinner

Warm skies on Thursday, May 3, prompted South Precinct officers to ignite their propane barbecue and stand back as nearly two-dozen community members brought in a selection of chicken, hamburgers, and ribs for an appreciation dinner. From 6-8:30 between 30 and 35 officers working the second and third watch passed through the break room and helped themselves to some spectacular home cooking.

Rainier District Little League approaches final innings for 2007

RAINIER VALLEY - The 2007 Rainier District Little League season heads into the home stretch with games scheduled for the next two weeks at various South End locations. At the conclusion of the season, playoffs will be held for the rookies, minors and majors Divisions. On May 26, the League will also hold its annual Dewey Soriano exhibition games at Rainier Field.
